Dunleary Lifeboat Project

Restoration Progress and Exciting Plans Ahead for the Dunleary Lifeboat

If you’ve passed through Coal Harbour recently, you might have wondered what’s been happening underneath the tent covering the historic Dunleary Lifeboat.

While much of the restoration work is hidden from public view, our volunteers have been making steady progress, and we thought it was time to share a little look at what’s been going on behind the scenes.

Over the past few weeks, work has been progressing on the interior of the lifeboat, particularly the construction and fitting of the timber framework for the seating along the sides of the hull.

The photographs show the various stages of this work, from the initial timber framework being fitted through to the completed supports receiving their first coats of primer.

It’s painstaking work, with each piece carefully measured, cut and fitted to suit the shape of the original hull. There’s still plenty to be done, but it’s great to see the interior gradually coming back together.

As always, a huge thanks to our dedicated volunteers who continue to give their time, skills and energy to preserving this important piece of Dún Laoghaire’s maritime heritage.

Exciting Plans for 2027

While the restoration work continues, there’s also been plenty happening behind the scenes in planning for the future of the Dunleary Lifeboat.

The project committee has been working on some exciting developments which, if everything comes together as hoped, could mark a significant milestone in the project.

We’re not quite ready to share the details, as there are still a few things to be finalised, but we’re optimistic that we’ll have some very good news to announce in the early New Year.

2027 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Dunleary Lifeboat Project, and we’re looking forward to sharing more about our plans when the time is right.

In the meantime, restoration work continues, and we’ll keep sharing photographs and updates as the Dunleary’s story unfolds.
